It is a triangle shaped piece that can be worn many ways.
The design is the famous Selburose, which became popular on mittens in the small Norwegian town called Selbu, in the late 1800s. The first pair of selbu mittens with this design was knitted in 1858. Read more about the history of this pattern here.
